A hospital stay can disrupt the familiar place and routine that keep dentures safe. Packing a proper case and telling staff what you normally wear can help reduce confusion. If admission is planned, prepare the information before the day rather than relying on memory when you are unwell.
Pack a recognisable case
Use a secure container and ask how it should be identified under the hospital's arrangements. Do not keep dentures wrapped in tissues or on a meal tray. Bring suitable care products in their packaging and tell staff about any special instructions for a lining or attachment.
Explain the normal routine
Tell staff whether you wear an upper, lower or partial denture, when you normally remove it and whether you need help. If you have a spare at home, say so, but do not bring multiple similar sets unless there is a clear reason. Record who should be contacted with questions.
Follow instructions for procedures
You may be asked to remove dentures for an operation, anaesthetic or other procedure. Follow the treating team's instructions and make sure the appliance is handed over and stored through the agreed process. Do not conceal a removable appliance because you feel embarrassed.
Report a problem early
If the denture is missing, damaged or no longer comfortable, tell staff promptly. Ask how this affects eating, mouth care and follow-up. If you need assistance, the care plan should say so. A return home is also a useful time to check that the usual denture, case and care instructions have all come back with you.
