Missing teeth can change the support around the lips and cheeks. Simon explains how denture design can help restore support while still allowing the appliance to function.
Tooth position affects appearance
Where the front teeth sit can influence the way the lips are supported. The gum-coloured part of the denture also contributes. The aim is a result that suits your face, rather than adding as much bulk as possible.
Support must work with stability
Pushing the teeth or base too far into the lips can create forces that displace a removable denture. Appearance, speech, comfort and retention need to be assessed together, especially with full dentures.
Use the try-in to talk it through
Bring photographs if they help explain the look you prefer. At the appropriate try-in stage, ask how the teeth and lip support look when relaxed and smiling. Dentures cannot promise a particular facial change or reverse every effect of ageing. Simon can explain what is achievable in your mouth and what other options might need assessment.
