Whether to leave dentures in overnight is a common question. Simon discusses fit, cleanliness and individual circumstances in this episode. The distinction between personal advice and a general recommendation is especially important here.
The usual advice is to remove them
NHS guidance recommends removing dentures at night so the gums can rest, unless your clinician gives you different instructions. A newly fitted immediate denture after extractions can be an exception for a short period. Follow the instructions you were given for that treatment.
Why the video needs context
Simon expresses a different view about some clean, well-fitting dentures. That should not be taken as a general instruction to sleep in yours. Your mouth, the denture and any inflammation need to be assessed before an individual wearing schedule is agreed.
Ask about your own routine
If you are unsure, bring the denture to your dental team and explain whether you wear it at night. Ask how to store it, when to remove it and whether any short-term exception applies. Looseness, soreness or visible deposits are reasons to arrange a review, rather than simply carry on overnight.
