A natural-looking denture depends on more than whether treatment is NHS or private. In this episode, Simon discusses how tooth materials and the time available for individual design can influence appearance.
Look at the details
The shade, shape, surface and position of the teeth affect how they look when you smile. Some denture teeth use several layers and different optical effects to give more depth than a flat, uniform colour.
Ask what your treatment includes
If you are comparing options, ask which teeth and base materials are proposed, what choices you can make and how the appearance will be checked. A private plan may offer additional choices, but price or funding alone cannot tell you how a particular denture will look.
Avoid a blanket judgement
Simon expresses strong personal views about budget dentures in the video. Individual results vary, and it would be misleading to say all NHS dentures look fake. Use the discussion as a starting point for questions about your own treatment. At the try-in, discuss the appearance as well as comfort, speech and function before the denture is finished.
