Do You Brush Dentures Like Normal Teeth?

Dentures need brushing, but they should be taken out of your mouth first. Simon explains that cleaning only the visible teeth misses much of the appliance.

Clean the whole denture

The fitting surface, the palate of an upper denture and the spaces around the teeth all need attention. Removing the denture makes those areas accessible and lets you clean your own mouth properly too. Rinsing alone will not remove everything that builds up.

Use a gentle approach

A soft brush and a suitable non-abrasive denture cleanser are a practical starting point. Simon discusses manual and electric brushes, but whichever you use, avoid aggressive scrubbing and follow the advice for your denture. Do not use ordinary abrasive toothpaste on the appliance.

Protect it from a fall

A slippery denture can break if it lands in a hard sink. Simon recommends cushioning the area beneath your hands with a towel or water. Keep a secure grip and rinse the denture thoroughly. Clean any remaining natural teeth separately with fluoride toothpaste, alongside the gum and tongue care your dental team recommends.
