The paste that is right for your natural teeth may not be right for your denture. Simon explains why the surface of acrylic needs different care.
Why abrasion matters
Natural enamel and denture acrylic are different materials. An abrasive toothpaste can leave small scratches on the acrylic, taking away its polish. A rougher surface can then make cleaning more difficult as deposits collect on it.
Look for a suitable denture cleanser
A non-abrasive cream or cleanser designed for your appliance is a better starting point than choosing by flavour or brand alone. Some dentures have metal components or soft linings, so check that the product is compatible with every part of yours.
Keep natural tooth care separate
Taking your denture out lets you clean it and your mouth thoroughly. Continue to brush remaining natural teeth with fluoride toothpaste; the advice to avoid abrasive toothpaste here concerns the denture itself. If you are not sure which product you have, show it to Simon or the clinic team at your next review.
