Talking Dentures video thumbnail: Sleeping with dentures: your wearing routine explained

This earlier Talking Dentures episode looks at overnight wear, cleanliness and the condition of the gums. It is useful to distinguish Simon's discussion of selected situations from the usual advice for denture wearers.

Follow the usual overnight guidance

NHS advice is to remove dentures at night unless your dental professional has given different instructions. That gives the tissues a period without the appliance. Immediately after extractions, a clinician may prescribe a different short-term routine.

Do not use a denture as a night guard without advice

Simon discusses tooth grinding in the video. Grinding and jaw symptoms need their own assessment; a removable denture should not be assumed to replace a prescribed protective appliance. Tell your dentist if you clench, grind or wake with jaw discomfort.

Agree an individual plan

Ask how and when to remove, clean and store your particular denture. Mention soreness, looseness or deposits and have them checked. The video expresses a more permissive view of overnight wear than standard NHS guidance. Use your own clinician's assessed instructions rather than changing your routine on the strength of a general discussion.
