Talking Dentures video thumbnail: What Are Immediate Dentures?

An immediate denture is prepared before teeth are removed so it can be fitted straight after extraction. Simon explains how that differs from a denture made after the mouth has healed.

Planning happens before extraction

Impressions and treatment planning take place while the teeth are still present. The dentist carrying out the extractions and the denture team need to coordinate the appointments. Ask what you will leave the appointment wearing and what follow-up is included.

Healing changes the fit

The shape of the gums and supporting tissues changes after teeth are removed. An immediate denture can therefore need adjustments or relining, and a replacement may be discussed later. The timing depends on your healing and treatment plan rather than one fixed number of months.

Temporary and immediate are not identical

A temporary denture can also be made for another reason, such as an interim replacement for a lost appliance. Immediate describes the timing around extraction. Follow your dentist's aftercare instructions, including the initial wearing schedule, cleaning and food advice. Ask how the longer-term denture will be planned before treatment starts.
