Pain relief may make a sore area easier to cope with temporarily, but it does not explain why a denture is hurting. Simon's clearest advice is to have the cause assessed.

Find the source of the pressure

An edge, a change in fit or the way the teeth meet may need attention. Tell the clinician when the pain began and whether the denture is new or has been comfortable for years. A familiar denture becoming painful is worth investigating.

Ask about short-term relief

A pharmacist can advise whether a mouth-ulcer treatment or an over-the-counter painkiller is suitable for you. Follow the label and take account of your medicines and health conditions. Products mentioned in a video are not automatically appropriate for every patient.

Do not mask a continuing problem

Avoid using pain relief simply to keep wearing an appliance that repeatedly injures the tissues. Arrange an appointment and ask whether a break from wearing it is appropriate while you wait. The solution may be a small adjustment, a reline or another plan, depending on the examination.
