What’s the Difference Between Full and Partial Dentures?

Talking Dentures video thumbnail: What’s the Difference Between Full and Partial Dentures?

The difference between a full denture and a partial denture is simply how many natural teeth it replaces in one jaw. Simon gives a short explanation in this episode.

What a full denture replaces

A full, or complete, denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower jaw. You can have a complete upper denture without needing a complete lower one: each arch is considered separately.

What a partial denture replaces

A partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth while some natural teeth remain in that jaw. Its design takes account of those teeth and the spaces to be restored. Materials and support vary with the situation.

Why the distinction matters

Planning for a partial denture includes the condition of the remaining teeth and the appropriate dentist assessment. Planning for a full denture involves different support and retention considerations. You do not have to know which design you need before a consultation. Bring any existing denture and explain which teeth or spaces are causing concern so the options can be discussed.
